About Richard
Richard Coles is an Australian furniture maker and designer with over 30 years’ experience in fine woodworking and teaching.
Starting his career in Melbourne, Victoria, Richard commenced an apprenticeship in cabinet making with local maker John McLennan. Building on his interest in design and fine woodwork, he graduated from the renowned Canberra School of Art under the tutorship of legendary designer-makers such as George Ingham and David Upfill-Brown.
Today, traditional furniture making techniques and craftsmanship continue to guide his practice. Richard has a vast knowledge of wood that he calls on for his specialist veneer and timber wholesale business, selling to national commercial retailers as well as individual hobbyists and craftspeople.
Balancing classic proportions with organic design, Richard’s work thoughtfully combines aesthetics, function and form. Emphasising beautiful sustainable Australian native timbers and veneers, he continues to produce timeless pieces that transform his clients’ homes and businesses.
